J. F. Kennedy Park/Lake

5430 Sports, the leader in triathlon and multisport events, brings the 5430 TriZona Triathlon … the first open water swim triathlon ever in Tucson! In its first year, TriZona will consist of one short-intermediate triathlon with a 750 meter swim, a 14 mile bike, and 3.5 mile run. The venue will be closed to the public that morning, allowing our 600 participants (cap) to race comfortably and safely. Registration for TriZona will open at midnight on January 8, 2014.
A Great Venue
Since living in Tucson over the past four years, Jodee and Barry have been eager to put on an event in this great community. Incredibly, we found that Kennedy Lake (at J. F. Kennedy Park in Tucson) actually has potable water (like the water that comes into your home) feeding into it. We have had water sampling tested by Turner Labs here in Tucson; and, the water quality is actually quite excellent – far better than the water we are used to at the Boulder Reservoir in Colorado; and, most likely, better than Tempe Town Lake. The threshold for the water quality test in Boulder is “235 E coli per 100ml sample.” On November 21, 2013, our test at Kennedy Lake came back at 6.3 E coli per 100ml sample! We plan on testing the water at least three times before the event – and, definitely the week of the race – and will post the results here. Visit the Lake … you can really see the water’s clarity.
The City of Tucson limits activity in the Lake to fishing, as the City does have a “no swimming” ordinance in effect; however, for this one morning of the year, triathletes will enjoy this beautiful setting. Water temperatures at this time of year have ranged from 64-71 degrees for the past three years, and – as noted – our first water sample of the Lake came back well within acceptable standards for swimming. Water safety considerations will include a substantial number of kayaks and other boats on the water with lifeguards, “waves” of less than 150 swimmers at a time, and use of wetsuits will be allowed. The venue also features the beautiful Kennedy Park Fiesta Area, where the packet pick-up and the 5430 Health, Wellness & Fitness Expo will take place the day before the event. This picture features the Fiesta Area, with the lake in the background.
