- PRO ATHLETE INFORMATION

Chris McCormack and Craig Alexander with Jodee and Barry Siff after Ironman Hawaii 2007.
"I love 5430 races – they are awesome events!" – Craig Alexander, 70.3 World Champion, 2nd Hawaii Ironman
|
The Boulder Peak and 5430 Long Course Triathlons will once again be among the largest “money races” in the U.S. in 2008. Each race has had its share of stellar athletes over the years including the likes of Tim DeBoom, Craig Alexander, Simon Lessing, Matt Reed, Samantha McGlone, Joanna Zeiger, Sarah Haskins and Leanda Cave. Both races receive excellent regional and national media coverage. Both Inside Triathlon and Triathlete Magazines covered our races in 2007, and Comcast Entertainment Television presented a one-hour program of the Boulder Peak in 2007. We expect even more media coverage in 2008.
Pro Meeting:
The Pro Meeting for both the Boulder Peak and 5430 Long Course races will take place on the Saturday before the race at noon at the Boulder Reservoir (in the pavilion area behind the stage). You will receive your race packets, and instructions from the race director and the head referee.
Boulder Peak Triathlon:
The Boulder Peak Triathlon Pro Challenge on July 20, 2008 at the Boulder Reservoir will increase its prize money to $35,000! As we have for the past 11 years, the women will begin the race with a handicapped head start over the men. The women will begin at 8:45 a.m. and the men will follow 14-16 minutes later. There will be a bonus prime of $1,000 for the first pro across the finish line. The prize money will be awarded to the men and women (equally) as follows:
- 1st Place $6,000
- 2nd Place $4,500
- 3rd Place $3,000
- 4th Place $2,000
- 5th Place $1,000
There will also be a $250 prime for the first man and woman out of the water, and a $250 prime to the first man and woman to the top of Old Stage Hill on the bike course. The 10K run is a special 3-loop course, with each loop returning near the finish line. This affords athletes a good look at their competition, is more media friendly, and is definitely a crowd pleaser.
5430 Long Course Triathlon:
The 5430 Long Course Triathlon will be held on August 10, 2008 at the Boulder Reservoir. The prize purse of $23,000 will be awarded to the women and men (equally) as follows:
- 1st Place $5,000
- 2nd Place $3,000
- 3rd Place $1,500
- 4th Place $1,000
- 5th Place $500
There will also be a $250 prime for the first man and woman out of the water, and a $250 prime to the man and woman with the fastest bike split.
Complimentary Entries:
Complimentary entries for both races will be afforded to any pro athlete who has:
- Finished in the Top 10 overall of either the Boulder Peak or the 5430 Long Course Triathlon in either 2006, 2007 or 2008.
- Finished in the top 10 of any of the following races in 2006, 2007, or 2008: any WTC or IMNA event, any ITU World Cup, Escape From Alcatraz, Wildflower, Chicago Accenture, Lifetime Fitness, and Xterra World Championships
- You must register at least 30 days prior to the event in order to receive a complimentary entry
A completed hard copy Professional Registration form must be mailed to 5430 Sports directly (1507 North Street, Boudler, CO 80304). See links below for Pro entry forms.
Other Pro Entries:
First or second year pros (getting their pro license in 2007 or 2008) may enter the Boulder Peak Triathlon for $50 and the 5430 Long Course Triathlon for $80 until June 15 and July 1, respectively. After that, full entry fee will be required.
USAT Membership:
All US Elite Athletes must bring their valid USA Triathlon card to packet pick up! If you do not have your current card with you, you will not be able to compete.
All Foreign Elites athletes competing in the Professional category must hold an Elite license from their National Federation or have raced as an Elite in international events. All Foreign Professional competitors must either have a current USAT membership or pay the $10 USAT fee, regardless of a Comp or other discounted entry. If you have recently purchased an annual membership, you may go the USA Triathlon website and print a temporary card which will suffice for the event.
Pro Entry Rule Rationale:
5430 Sports is committed to promoting and rewarding pro athletes who support our events. We have raised our prize money and visibility significantly over the years, and are committed to continuing this. In order for us to do this, though, it is very important to get early commitments from our pro field for PR purposes. This is good for the athlete, as well as for our event. This is why we will hold strictly to our deadlines for complimentary and discounted entries to our races. In addition, we have decided this year to have stricter “qualifying standards” for such entries, as well as minimum performance criteria and feel this is justified with the amount of prize money offered.

Important Information from USAT for Professional Triathletes Only:
USA Triathlon requires that all participants use a US CPSC approved bicycle helmet. The CPSC approval sticker is found inside the helmet. As in the past, all professional athletes will have their helmets inspected on race day and any helmet that does not contain the CPSC approval sticker will not be allowed for use. This definitely created problems last year (2006) for at least 2 professionals. All helmets purchased in
the United States are, by law, CPSC approved. Aero or Chrono style helmets may be used, but must be CPSC approved.
Examples of APPROVED aero or chrono helmets are:
- Giro Advantage 2
- LAS Chrono
- Lazer Chrono 3
- Limar Chrono 05
- Louis Garneau Rocket
- Louis Garneau Chrono
- Rudy Project Syton Supercomp
- Rudy Project Syton Open
- Shain BK500
- Spiuk Kronos
Examples of aero helmets that DO NOT meet CPSC standards and are illegal for use are:
- Bell Meteor II
- Briko Chrono
- Casco Warp II
- Catlike Chrono
- Cratoni Chrono
- KED Zeitfahren
- Limar Superchrono
- MET Pac III
- Selev Chrono
- Specialized chrono
- Uvex Factory Pilot 2
A list of all helmets on the market and whether they are CPSC approved may be found at http://www.bhsi.org/helmet07.htm
Specific questions may be addressed to Charlie Crawford, USAT Commissioner of Officials. Email charlie@usatriathlon.org. Phone 334-332-9092.
Home Stays:
Boulder is a terrifically supportive community for triathletes. As such, if you would like us to find a home stay for you during your time in Boulder for one of our races, please let us know (barry@5430sports.com) and we will see what we can do. This has never been a problem in the past.
