5430 Sports tallies impressive sustainability results in 2007 events

Boulder, Colorado September 5, 2007 — With the passing of Labor Day weekend bringing a hint of fall to Boulder, now is a good time to reflect on the unique mission laid out by to minimize the environmental impact of all their summer 2007 sporting events in Boulder. The Tri Sustainability Initiative was created to emphasize sustainability at the Boulder Triathlon Series, and the Zero Waste event component was integrated into the BoulderRaces! Running Series.

Thanks to a working partnership with Eco-Cycle, and supporting partnerships from Inside Triathlon, Alpine Realty, and Acquire Home Loans, both the Tri Sustainability Initiative at the triathlon series, and the Zero Waste running races were tremendously successful in reducing their environmental impact.

Eco-Cycle helped tally the Zero Waste results for the summer’s events:

  • the three triathlon events achieved 93%, 93%, and 92% diversion rates, meaning at each event only 7% of the total waste collected went to the landfill – the highest diversion rates for any Boulder County events in 2007!

  • for all events, 4,036 gallons of cardboard was recycled, saving 38 trees

  • for all events, 3,350 gallons of commingled containers were recycled, saving 3,870 kW hours of energy

  • for all events, 19,649 lbs. of compostable material was collected, creating valuable compost instead of going to waste in the landfill

5430 Sports also worked with Clif Bar and Native Energy to help make the triathlon series carbon neutral, purchasing enough Cool Tags, ($2 renewable energy credits that directly fund Native Energy’s Rosebud St. Francis Wind Farm) to offset each event’s fuel and electricity usage – over 5,000 lbs of carbon emissions.

In addition, Clif Bar encouraged event participants to offset their own carbon emissions from travel to the events; enough Cool Tags were purchased to offset over 202,000 lbs of carbon emissions!

Thanks to all the dedicated volunteers and participants who helped make this season’s 5430 Sports triathlon and running events more sustainable.

EAS Named Title Sponsor of Boulder Triathlon Series
5430 Sports Opens Registration New Year’s Day

Boulder, CO - January 1, 2007 - Registration for all 5430 Sports summer triathlons opened on January 1, 2007. These include the 5430 Sprint, Boulder Peak, 5430 Long Course, and Steamboat Springs Triathlons. Once again, a special “early bird” package price for the 3 Boulder Triathlon races – the Sprint, Peak, and Long Course – will be offered. Over 5,500 athletes are expected to participate in these, as well as 5430’s two winter triathlons and two kids’ triathlons. The four major races will again sell out in 2007, as they did in 2006.

As always, 5430 Sports will be awarding one of the richest prize purses for age group athletes in the world. Last year, over $10,000 in cash and $5,000 in gift certificates to age group champions for the Series, as well as a number of airline tickets, wetsuits, and other goodies were awarded. Even more will be awarded in 2007! The pro prize purse for the Boulder Peak will also be increased to $30,000, and the 5430 Long Course to $20,000. The likes of Craig Alexander, Tim DeBoom, Leanda Cave , Joanna Zeiger, Cam Widoff, and many other internationally ranked pros raced at the Boulder Peak and 5430 Long Course Triathlons. As always, all participants will get technical race shirts, cool finisher awards, massage, beer, great food, and a huge expo at all summer triathlons.

5430 Sports is extremely excited to announce EAS (www.eas.com) as the new Title Sponsor for our Series races. EAS’ Myoplex fuel bars will be 5430’s “Official Energy/Nutrition Bar,” and the three Series races will be titled: the EAS 5430 Sprint, EAS Boulder Peak , and EAS 5430 Long Course Triathlons. Thanks to this partnership, 5430 will be able to offer more to all of its athletes, and step the events up yet another notch in 2007.

5430 is also excited to announce Bicycle Village (www.bicyclevillage.com) as the new Presenting Sponsor for the EAS 5430 Sprint Triathlon. With five locations in and around Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs, Bicycle Village has made a strong statement of their support for triathlon in this region, and will be extremely visible and active at all 5430 Sports events.

Gatorade, Zoot, and bd’s return – along with its newest major sponsors, Gatorade Endurance will once again be 5430’s “Official Energy Drink” at all events; Zoot returns as a key apparel partner (wait till you see their new Zenith wetsuit!); and bd’s Mongolian barbeque, with locations in Boulder & Denver, will again offer a cash prime to the fastest run times for our male and female age group athletes in each Series race (eat healthy – eat at bd’s).

With winter triathlon season just around the corner – races are on January 14 and February 4 – 5430 is thrilled to announce every 1st and 2nd place age group finisher at both winter triathlons will receive a free pair of Pearl Izumi running shoes. In addition, Clif and their terrific Clif Blocs will be plentiful at both winter triathlons. The February 4 race is both the USA Triathlon National Winter Championship and the ITU Pan-American Championship.

For those who caught the 2006 NBC telecast of the Hawaii Ironman, you clearly saw why 5430 Sports has chosen ALS as its designated charity. Not only is Jon Blais a friend of 5430; but, our passion for finding a cure was started with our own John Stermer, who was diagnosed with ALS shortly after the 2004 5430 Long Course Triathlon, and passed away earlier this year. Nearly $20,000 was raised in 2006 for 5430’s support of research for a cure by ALSTDF. Triathlon Coach Mike Ricci, is leading the way in 2007 with the site begun by Jon Blais himself – www.waronals.com. Please take a moment to check it out and see Jon’s video from Ironman.
