- LATEST NEWS
- Ready to Race???
Boulder, Colorado June 19, 2009 — With the 5430 Sprint Triathlon, Presented by Amica, just a couple days away, we are
in race mode. For those racing on Sunday, the final race info can be found on the
Sprint website. Just a couple quick notes to add to that race info:
- On Saturday, you will not receive your timing chip. You will get that in the body
marking area on Sunday by displaying your race bib/number, which you will get on
Saturday, along with all your other race numbers, swim cap, etc.
- Clydesdales & Athenas – a wonderful suggestion was made to mark the back of your
calf with a “C” or an “A” vs. your age group. That way, Athenas and Clydesdales
will know who you are racing. We ask that you tell the body marker that you are
Clydesdale or Athena when asked your age group, as they will not be asking are you a
Clydesdale or Athena. Thanks!
- Bake Cookies!!! As we all know, volunteers are critical to all races, and we
always try to say thank you to our volunteers in special ways. One way for you to
help out, if you are racing, is to bake cookies, and bring them with you on
Saturday. We add them to the goodies our volunteers get on race day; and, believe
us, they are appreciated! Just bring them to our Volunteer and Info Tent on
Saturday.
- Shoes & Energy Bar Wrappers – as always, and as part of our Tri Sustainability
program, we will be collecting used running shoes and any other athletic apparel, to
be donated to One World Running. This will, in turn, go somewhere in the world
where the products are greatly needed and appreciated. Also, used energy bar
wrappers. These go to Terra Cycle, who makes them into cool, new products. Bike
inner tubes, too, can be brought in – we’ll give them to local cool company, Green
Guru, to be made into wallets, messenger bags, etc.
Zeal at the Sprint
Zeal Optics brings back their "Buy One Get One" sunglass offer! Trade in an old,
tired pair of name brand sunglasses, purchased within the last year (proof of
purchase required) and you will receive one brand new pair of Zeals free with your
sunglass purchase. They will also offer 50% off the purchase of one pair this
weekend, with a trade in.
Zeal does not run these recycled sunglasses over with their bikes; rather, they turn
them around and donate them to charities in need of eyewear around the world. If
you can not make it to this weekend's event, you may still take advantage of the
exclusive 5430 - Zeal 20% off offer! Enter Code 5430ZEAL at time of purchase for
all online orders. Thanks to Zeal Optics for their tremendous products and
wonderful support of triathlon.
Another Cool Race Opportunity
Former Pro Cyclist, Clark Sheehan, has been running a series of Time Trial cycling
races each Wednesday evening in Boulder for a few years now. These are 10.1 miles –
from Lyons to Broadway in Boulder, along US36. These are awesome training races for
any triathlete, and cyclists of all abilities are there – from world class pros to
recreational/more casual riders. Check it all out at Boulder
TT Series. The time trials only run through July --- try something different by
getting a taste of some serious cycling action.
Long Course Update
With fewer than 150 slots remaining in the August 9 Long Course, if you haven’t
signed up yet, you might want to do so. The final 100 slots always go rather
quickly after the Sprint weekend.
Important Note Regarding Future Newsletters
Another reminder that in order to receive any future correspondence from 5430 Sports
events, including important information regarding the Boulder Peak, Long Course,
etc., you must now register your email address through Ironman. This is actually
designed to protect you and your email information. Please click here
and register immediately, so that you do not miss out on any news in the future
regarding our events. This includes all future final race instructions.
Even if you’re not racing this weekend, come on down and enjoy the energy that will
be flowing at the Sprint; and, we don’t just mean the energy provided by our Bella
Energy Solar Generator! Amica Insurance, our Presenting Sponsor, is going to have a
way cool “Inspiration Tent,” where families and friends can create motivational
signs for their athletes; plus, lots of goodies. Come check out our new 5430
merchandise, as well as great offerings from our sponsors and other exhibitors. We
are certainly ready & psyched … hope you are!!! Jodee & Barry.
- 2009 5430 Sprint Final Race Information
Greetings!
This update contains valuable information regarding next Sunday’s 5430 Sprint
Triathlon, presented by Amica, June 21. We strongly suggest you print this email
update, and save it for race week. The race has been sold out since January, and we
expect between 1,300 – 1,400 people to start the race – hope you’re as excited as we
are!
- Schedule of Events
- Saturday, June 20
- 10 am - 4 pm: Expo & Packet Pick Up, Boulder
Reservoir
Packet Pick Up: There will be no packet pick up on race day. You
must go to the Boulder Reservoir on June 20 (day before the race) to pick up your
packet. If you are absolutely unable to do so, you must contact jodee@5430sports.com immediately to discuss
arrangements.
Photo ID & USAT Cards: You must bring a photo ID and, if you are
an annual USAT member, you must bring your valid USA Triathlon card to packet pick
up (USAT regulations). If you do not have a valid card with you, and have not
pre-paid the $10 one-day license fee, you will be required to sign up for a one-day
license at the event ($10.00 cash).
Pre-Race Meetings: Mandatory pre-race meetings will be held at 11
am, 1 and 3 pm. Valuable information regarding the event will be presented, and you
will have the opportunity to ask questions. You must attend one of these meetings
in order to pick up your race packet! We strongly suggest you not plan on arriving
and trying to pick up your packet just before a meeting time, as this is when lines
are longest. Try coming a bit earlier, pick your stuff up and check out the Expo
before a meeting; or, conversely, attend a meeting and pick up your packet after the
meeting.
Race Numbers: You will receive three race numbers at packet pick
up. The numbered sticker must be worn on the front of your bike helmet. A bicycle
frame number must be attached where it can be seen by officials. The bib number
must be worn on the front of your body during the entire run portion of the event
(and must be on and visible prior to leaving the Transition Area). You will be body
marked on race morning before the swim.
Sprint Prep Clinic: Neal Henderson - Sports Science Manager at the
Boulder Center for Sports Medicine, highly acclaimed cycling and triathlon coach,
and former pro triathlete - will conduct a brief clinic and talk about the 5430
Sprint for those maybe doing the race for the first time. This will be at noon near
the Expo stage. Neal will answer any questions you may have, and help you on your
way to a wonderful experience on Sunday.
5430 Sports Merchandise: For the first time, 5430 Sports will have
a wide variety of 5430 branded merchandise for purchase at the Sprint. This
includes such items as some sweet apparel, bike jerseys, jackets, hats, coffee mugs,
and more. Come ready to shop!
Amica Inspiration Booth Be sure to visit the Amica Insurance
Inspiration Booth, where friends and family will be able to get into the spirit of
cheering in many new and fun ways. Amica, our Sprint Presenting Sponsor, is making
a big investment in triathlon and helping fuel our lifestyle needs. Please be sure
to learn more about Amica on race weekend.
Special Cervelo Raffle for Blindness One of our dearest and most
competitive triathletes of all time, Chris Peters, was diagnosed with MS late last
year; and, as a result, will not be racing this year. In an incredible act of
kindness and generosity, Chris has donated his almost new Cervelo P3 for a raffle to
raise money for our charity, Foundation Fighting Blindness. This 54cm bike is in
perfect condition, and will be shown on race weekend. Raffle tickets are just $10 a
piece, and 100% of the proceeds will go to Foundation Fighting Blindness. The
raffle will take place after the 5430 Long Course on August 9. HUGE thanks to Chris
for this unbelievable donation; and, best wishes to you from the entire 5430
community.
- Sunday, June 21 --- Race Day!
5:30 - 6:30 am -Athlete check-in, body marking, rack your bike
7:30 am - Triathlon Race Start - First Wave
8:15 am - 10th and Final Wave Start
8:45 – 11 am - Post-race food, drink, music & Expo
10:45 am - Awards Ceremony
5430 Sports encourages all athletes and their families to join us for the Awards
Ceremony at 10:45. There will be several great raffle prizes at the Awards
Ceremony, and you must be present to win these prizes.
- Course Information
Course Maps - The maps and description of the course are on the www.5430sports.com site, and
are accurate. The entire course is pretty much within 200 feet of Boulder's
elevation: 5,430 :) ... so, altitude is an issue, requiring serious attention to
hydration (and sunscreen)!
Water Temperature - The Boulder Reservoir temperature as of June 13 is in the
lower 60’s. Wetsuits will be allowed and are highly recommended.
Swim Waves - There will be 10 swim waves of 150 or fewer people. These will
go off 5 minutes apart, starting at 7:30 AM. The waves will be by age group and
sex, as follows:
Wave-1 – Men 20-24; Men 30-34
Wave-2 – Men 35-39; Men 19 & Under
Wave-3 – Men 25-29; Clydesdale
Wave-4 – Men 40-44; Men 50-54
Wave-5 – Men 45-49; Men 55-59
Wave-6 – Women 29 & Under
Wave-7 – Women 30-34
Wave-8 – Women 35-39
Wave-9 – Women 40-49
Wave-10 – Men 60+; Women 50+; Athena
Bike Check - There is no required bike check for the event. If you need
assistance prior to the race, we suggest visiting Adrenaline Tri Sport in Niwot (if
in the Boulder area), or Bike Source, if in and around Denver or Highlands Ranch.
Bike Source will also be at the 5430 Expo on Saturday for small adjustments, etc;
while Adrenaline Tri Sport will be on site before the race on Sunday.
Transition Area – The transition area (TA) opens at 5:30 am. Bikes may be
racked at that time. Any gear for the bike-to-run transition will be placed near
your bike. The transition area is only open to competitors. The area is
designed to allow easy visual access for friends and family without having them
actually inside the area. Regardless of your wave, the Transition Area will
absolutely be closed at 7:15 am. The TA will be set up according to waves –
please be sure you position your bike in your designated area – 4 bikes to a rack.
Aid Stations - There will be 1 aid station on the bike course – roughly
halfway, and at miles 1 and 2 on the run course. The bike aid stations will have
bottles of Gatorade Endurance ready for you, as well as bottles of water. The run
aid stations will have cups of Gatorade Endurance, water, and Hammer Energy Gels.
There will also be an aid station as you exit the TA onto the run, and this will
have Gatorade, water, and Hammer Gels.
Please help our volunteers keep the race course clean, and the residents on the
course happy, by discarding empty gel packets, water bottles, banana peels, cups,
etc. at the aid stations while racing - thank you! Any discard of litter away from
aid station areas is subject to a race penalty, and we will be absolutely strict
about this.
Please use the portable toilets that are available at the race site. Please be
courteous & respectful of the neighbors, farmers, and other folks out on the roads.
The roads are open to traffic. You must ride on the right hand side of the road,
unless instructed otherwise by a Police Officer. We will have Officers and Course
Marshals throughout the bike course.
Medical Info - An ambulance and medical service will be present at the
Boulder Reservoir in case of emergency. A medical tent will be set up near the
transition area. The weather may be hot and dry, and the course is very exposed.
It is of critical importance to stay well hydrated throughout the race. If
you have questions or concerns about your ability to continue, please request aid.
Radio and telephone communications will be used on the course. Let someone know if
you need help.
Post Race Info - Food, beer, live music, and our Expo will be
available following your race. We strongly urge you to stay for the 10:45 Awards
Ceremony. We will have some terrific random raffle prizes at the awards ceremony.
You will need your race number to go through the food line. We will, also, be
selling meal tickets for your family & friends for $5, so that they may pass through
the food line on race day.
Parking – You will be allowed to enter the Boulder Reservoir on Saturday at
no charge to pick up your race packet, attend the athlete meeting, and visit our
Expo. On race day, all competitors, friends, and family may enter the Reservoir
free until 7:30am. After that time, the Reservoir will charge their normal
admission price. NOTE: There is absolutely no parking outside the Reservoir –
period! People parking in the neighborhoods or on any roads nearby will be subject
to tickets and being towed.
Dogs - The Boulder reservoir does not permit dogs at the Reservoir, and have
been very strict about that this year. Please be aware of this policy, respect it,
and leave your pets at home just for this day as it will be far too hot and
dangerous to leave your dog in your car. Thanks!
Awards – As is our tradition, our 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each
age group will receive a custom-made award, crafted by Jodee.
Special Prizes – Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, our top age group
finishers will receive some terrific prizes, on top of their awards. This year, all
first place age group finishers will have their choice of a Timex watch or a pair of
Zeal sunglasses. The second place finisher in each age group will receive either
the eyewear or watch award the first place person did not select. All third place
age group finishers will receive a wonderful pair of TYR swim goggles.
Tri-Sustainability Initiative 5430 Sports will be continuing our
Tri-Sustainability Initiative at the 5430 Sprint Triathlon. Tri-Sustainability is a
broad-based effort to minimize the environmental impact of 5430’s event productions,
and most importantly encourage event participants to give sustainability a “Tri” in
their athletic pursuits and daily lives.
Tri-Sustainability will feature several components to help “green” the Sprint, as
well as make it easier for racers to “green” their participation. Be ready to come
on out to the race and learn more about what 5430 is doing to make it’s events more
sustainable, and what you can do to help our efforts on race day, and how you can
introduce sustainability into your lifestyle.
We’re striving to be a Zero Waste event: recycling and composting as much waste as
possible with Eco-Cycle, and creating as little trash as possible. In 2007, we
actually diverted over 93% of our trash away from the landfills, and received the
“Event of the Year” award from Eco-Cycle for our efforts. Our goal is to get back
to that level in 2009 … and we can do it with your help.
You’ll be able to recycle your Gatorade EDGE and Eldorado Springs plastic bottles,
and compost your tableware from the post-race pancake breakfast; we’ll be recycling
the event’s cardboard waste and finding another use for leftover Gatorade water
bottles
We ask that you try to reuse cups and your Eldorado Springs plastic bottles as
much as possible after the race.
5430 Sports will purchase renewable energy credits to offset the CO2 emissions
from the event operation
Racers will be able to offset the CO2 emissions from their travel by purchasing a
Cool Tag at time of registration or onsite race weekend, which offsets 300 miles of
driving.
Bella Energy will, once again, power our event via their solar generator; thus, we
will not use any conventional sources of energy. Be sure to check this out!
We will also be collecting your slightly used running shoes and any other
triathlon apparel for One World Running. A non-profit group, which then distributes
our donations to people in need in other countries. Also, bring your used energy
bar wrappers to Clif’s “Wrapper Brigade” – a great program, whereby, the wrappers
get recycled by Clif into useful items … vs. into the landfill!
NOTE – Only those athletes who purchase a Cool Tag will be eligible for our
usual great raffle prizes. We are hoping everyone will participate in order to have
a chance in the raffle.
Volunteers – If you know of any people or friends who may want to be part of
the action without racing, we can always utilize a few more volunteers – both for
Saturday packet pick-up and on race day. Please have them contact alisha@5430sports.com or call 303.442.0041
The 5th Annual 5430 Sprint Triathlon, Presented by Amica, is shaping up to, once
again, be an event to remember: a wonderful course in a spectacular venue for
triathlon, activity all weekend, fantastic awards, and a truly festive atmosphere.
Please feel free to email any questions you may have, and continued good training! Barry & Jodee Siff
- 5430 Sports Sold to
Ironman
Boulder, Colorado April 15, 2009 — After over 10 years producing multisport events – between MountainQuest Adventures
(1998-2003) and 5430 Sports (2004-present) – Jodee and I are taking a bit of a new
direction in our lives.
As of today – June 9, 5430 Sports will have some new owners … Ironman! We are so
excited about this … bringing the most recognized name in endurance sports to – what
we consider – the absolute “Mecca of Triathlon,” Boulder, Colorado.
The World Triathlon Corporation (owners of Ironman) has pledged to maintain the high
quality and integrity of what we have established through our events; and, as
someone who did his first Ironman in 1988, I can only say that this change will reap
many other tangible – and intangible – benefits to our community, and our
community/family of athletes … such as a Boulder 70.3 in 2010! Very little, if
anything, will change or be noticed this year. Jodee and I will remain active
through the transition this year, and I plan to stay quite active with Ironman
beyond 2009 in various capacities, mostly from a media standpoint.
Barry is looking forward to finishing three books he has had in progress for the
past 2 - 5 years (yes, one is triathlon related); as well as running a new race -
the intention of "pulling a petition" on August 4 to run for Boulder City Council
this Fall. Jodee will remain super busy – you can rest assured of that always –
with creating new and refurbished furniture pieces (including way cool doggie beds),
as well as crafting new and unique art pieces.
IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING FUTURE NEWSLETTERS
In order to receive any future correspondence from 5430 Sports events, including
important information regarding the Sprint, Peak, etc., you must now register your
email address through Ironman. This is actually designed to protect you and your
email information. Please
click
here and register immediately, so that you do not miss out on any news in the
future regarding our events. This includes all future final race instructions.
We hope you share in our enthusiasm and support of WTC; and, as always, we will
remain extremely involved and active in the sporting world – both here in Boulder,
and nationally. Thank you so much for your past and present support – both
personally and professionally – and, as always, see you out there. Jodee & Barry.

Volunteers & Volunteer Groups
If you are not racing a particular race – or, if you are associated with a group
which would like to help out – please consider volunteering at one of the 5430
events this summer. It’s a great way to give back to the sport and your fellow
athletes, and gives one a nice, maybe different, perspective on the event … plus,
great karma for your next race. Email jodee@5430sports.com to help out.
Tri Clinic Next Wednesday
Join Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Joanna Zeiger, and Physical Therapist, Bob Cranny,

We are very excited about our newest event – Wild on Windsor – as well as seeing

of awesome warm sunshine next week … see you out there, for sure! Barry & Jodee.
- Wild on Windsor Triathlon – August 30 – Mark Your Calendar!
Boulder, Colorado April 4, 2009 — As promised, 5430 Sports is producing a new Olympic Distance triathlon on Sunday,
August 30. The race will take place in Windsor, CO, located just east of Fort
Collins, just under one hour from Denver and Boulder. We are still finalizing

so, please register early, as this race should sell out quite quickly. We will send
out an announcement prior to race registration opening.
Boulder Peak – A Few Charity Slots Remain
The Boulder Peak Triathlon sold out in March; however, a few charity donation slots
remain for this classic event. This entails registering for the race, and donating
a minimum of $100 to our charity, Foundation Fighting Blindness. This opportunity
is available through online registration only, to both individuals and relay teams.
Athletes of the Year
Along with our very own Joanna Zeiger winning the Ironman 70.3 World Championship,
and Craig Alexander winning the Hawaii Ironman World Championship, 2 of our 5430
Series Champions received huge honors for their accomplishments in 2008:
Brooke Davison was named USA Triathlon Age Group Athlete of the Year; and, Ellen
Hart was named USA Triathlon Masters Athlete of the Year. Big-time congratulations
to both individuals – what a testament to the quality of our 5430 triathletes!
5430 Sports Facebook Group
If you haven’t joined 5430 Sports’ Facebook group page yet, you should. Besides
already getting a heads-up regarding the Windsor triathlon, our first 5430 trivia
contest was won by Lance Panigutti. Lance correctly identified 3 Colorado
triathlons that, at one time, had Hawaii Ironman qualifying slots: Boulder Peak,
Evergreen, and Desert Sun. Ah – the good old days! There will be more contests,
training tips, and quick 5430 announcements via the group page, so join today and
invite your friends.
Boulder Races! – Our Running Series
Everyone certainly knows about 5430’s triathlons; but, our running races are also 3
fun events to participate in. They each occur on Thursday evenings in Boulder – all
at 6PM – and include the Uni-Hill 2K, West End 3K, and the signature event, The
Pearl Street Mile. These are awesome family events – Craig Alexander’s daughter,
Lucy, ran her first ever race with us last year, as well as Matty Reed’s
fleet-footed son, Lachlan. The races are just $10 for the Kids Races - a shorter
distance for kids 11 and under - and $15 for adults. Register early, as these races
have limits of 500, 800, and 1,000, respectively.

Siff Appointed to ReSport Board of Directors
We are extremely proud to announce that Barry has been appointed to the Board of
Directors of The Council for Responsible Sport (ReSport). The Council for
Responsible Sport was founded in 2007 to administer a sustainability certification
for sporting events. The ReSport Standard defines a set of credits that provide
realistic objectives for event directors and a framework for achieving them. In the
announcement of this appointment ReSport recognized 5430 as introducing “the first
tenets of responsible race production to the industry in 2006; and, 5430’s Tri
Sustainability initiative, which focuses on eliminating waste, reducing the carbon
footprint, and having an active community outreach and education program.” We are
honored and excited to share and help develop sustainability efforts worldwide
through our support of ReSport.
Lots of news – lots of updates – it’s been a while. So, get ready to get Wild on
Windsor (WOW!) – step up the training – stay healthy – and, as always, we’ll see you
out there! Jodee & Barry.
- Boulder Peak – Less Than 240
Slots Remain
Boulder, Colorado February 27, 2009 — As of February 25, there are over 1,500 people registered for the 18th Annual
Boulder Peak Triathlon. We are accepting 1,750 athletes into the race; and, based
upon past history, this means the Peak may sell out soon. This may be your
final warning via our Newsletter.
The 5430 Long Course Triathlon, Presented by TYR, has over 800 entrants, leaving
ample room toward our 1,400 person field.
70 and Over?
Please do not forget: if you are 70 years of age or older this year, your entry into
the Boulder Peak Triathlon is free! Just print off a form, and mail it into the
address shown on the form. This is in honor and memory of our 5430 family member,
Howard Garcia.
Facebook – 5430 Sports Group
If you are on Facebook – or want to get into it – please join our 5430 Sports
Facebook Group. We are just learning how to “play” with the Group; but, we plan on
sending out brief and quick updates, notices, random news items, and even training
tips and the like on the page; so, you may want to join (there may even be some
contests – with prizes – from time-to-time).
Sponsor Update
BikeSource, located in both Highlands Ranch and Denver now, has been a loyal sponsor
of 5430 Sports events since 2005. This year, BikeSource will have a stepped up
presence at our triathlons, including mechanical assistance on the Saturday before
each race. Please support BikeSource today by visiting them at either location. www.bikesourceonline.com.
Whole Foods – it doesn’t get a “whole” lot better than Whole Foods fresh fruit and
fixings after a race! Once again, the great folks from Whole Foods will be
providing us with the best fruit on the planet, as well as all the makings for our
Annual Pancake Breakfast – on Father’s Day – at the 5430 Sprint Triathlon, Presented
by Amica. Please visit and support your local Whole Foods Market today!
Boulder Races! Update
Registration for this year’s premiere Downtown Boulder running races will open on
March 15. This year, the “series” will be a true series. Our more competitive
runners will be vying for Series Champion honors; and, in addition, there will be
some great surprises for the kids! The dates - 3 Thursday evenings in June, July,
and August – are posted at www.5430sports.com/BRS/index.htm.
USAT News
We are proud to report that Barry, a USA Triathlon Certified Race Director, was
recently appointed to USAT’s Race Director Committee. This Committee, comprised of
8 or 9 Race Directors from across the U.S., serves to essentially advise the USAT
Board of Directors on matters related to race management. We are honored to be an
active participant within our sport’s Governing Agency.
So … if you are not yet signed up for the Peak – do so now. On Facebook? Check out
and join the 5430 Sports group. And, most important, as Spring is beginning to
ascend upon us, here’s to a pre-season of terrific training, and living our lives to
the fullest! See you out there … Jodee & Barry.
- Sprint Sold Out – Boulder Peak
Next!
Boulder, Colorado February 1, 2009 — As predicted, the 5430 Sprint, Presented by Amica, sold out even earlier this year …
registering 1,500 participants, including 50 who purchased the final available
charity donation slots. To those wondering, there is no wait list.
The Boulder Peak will sell out next. As of last week, it was well over half
full; and, typically, it fills up rather quickly after the Sprint sells out. Please
don’t be one of the ones who wait, and then get surprised – and disappointed – when

Foundation Fighting Blindness Update
As of this week, we have raised nearly $5,000 for our charity, Foundation Fighting
Blindness. This has largely been through people adding $10, $20 when they have
registered for the races. The charity donation slots and our Ironman Viewing Party
also helped a lot. For more info on FFB, visit www.blindness.org.
Also, at our races this year, we will be selling special raffle tickets to help
raise money for this charity. In addition to watches, wetsuits, and other cool gear
… we have received an incredibly generous donation of a Cervelo P3 for this special
raffle – more details later on this. If you have anything special, of value, that
you would like to donate, please let us know. Thanks so much!
Tri Sustainability Update
As you know, we are collecting slightly used athletic shoes and apparel; energy bar
wrappers; and bike tubes – all to be recycled. We will be collecting these at all
of our events and, also, at our 5430 World HQ. All contributors will be eligible
for a special monthly drawing; and, our first winners (for January) are: Lynnda
Best-Wiss, Mike Ellis and Sara Johnson. They have won a Fuel Belt and a supply of
Hammer Nutrition Energy Gels.
Please start saving these items, and bring them by 5430 whenever you can. We can
all make a difference!

Chemosabee
One of our very own triathletes, Nancy Reinisch, has written and published a book:
“Chemosabee – A Triathlete’s Journey through the First Year of Breast Cancer.” The
book beautifully and inspirationally chronicles Nancy’s battle with breast cancer,
while maintaining her tremendous attitude and participation as a triathlete. We
congratulate Nancy on the book, as well as her victory at becoming a “cancer
survivor.” You can order the book online at www.atlasbooks.com, or order by phone

athletic shoes and apparel. Each month, we will be drawing winners from those who
bring us these items. You may drop them off at our offices – 3745 Cloverleaf Dr.,

TRI SUSTAINABILITY NEWS
5430 Sports is deeply committed to our environment and doing the right thing. That’s why we began our Tri Sustainability efforts in 2006. Since that time, the program has grown to include major recycling, composting, carbon emission focus, athlete education, and solar powered events. This year, we are expanding to include more community outreach efforts, as well as consulting to help other events locally and nationally.
In addition, we are collecting energy bar wrappers (any kind of bar – not gels), bike tubes, and lightly used athletic shoes and apparel. We have places to donate these generally discarded items, that will then be used for a further purpose – i.e., recycled. You are urged to either drop these off at 5430 Sports World HQ (3745 Cloverleaf Dr., Boulder, CO 80304 – white milk box on front step); or, mail them to us. Please be sure to attach your name to any donations, as each month we will draw a random winner, who will receive a great prize!
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS – NOT IN 2009
We are sorry to report that the Steamboat Springs Triathlon will not take place in 2009. Suffice it to say that we are disappointed, as well, to end this 4 year event; however, certain local issues precipitated this difficult decision.
The good news is plans are in the works for another 5430 event later in the season – stay tuned!
FOUNDATION FIGHTING BLINDNESS
Our December 13 Ironman Viewing Party raised over $700 for our new charity, Foundation Fighting Blindness. The party was a huge success, with several World Champions in attendance: Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Joanna Zeiger; Hawaii Ironman Amateur World Champion, Wendy Mader; 2X Xterra World Champion, Julie Dibens; and, the biggest surprise of the day, 2X Hawaii Ironman World Champion, Normann Stadler. Needless to say, it was a pretty good party … and a great show!
Please do consider making a donation to this incredibly important cause, when you register. Any amount – no matter how small – will be meaningful. With over 7,000 athletes doing 5430 Sports events in 2009, we can really make a difference! Our goal is to raise $30,000.
So, as we ring out 2008, and welcome 2009, we wish to thank all of you for your awesome support of 5430 Sports, and for allowing us the privilege of doing what we do. Good health, good training, much happiness, love … and Happy New Year! Jodee & Barry.
5430 Sports Receives Zero Waste Community Event Award
Boulder, Colorado April 28, 2008 — 5430 Sports was recognized on April 22 at the Boulder County Eco-Cycle Business Awards Luncheon for its highly successful environmental initiative known as “Tri Sustainability.” In receiving the “Zero Waste Community Event Award,” 5430 was specifically recognized “for a strong commitment to Zero Waste planning and education and for successfully recycling and composting an average of 93% of all materials at events.”
Thanks to a working partnership with Eco-Cycle, and supporting partnerships from Inside Triathlon, Alpine Realty, and Acquire Home Loans in 2007, both the Tri Sustainability Initiative at the triathlon series, and 5430’s Zero Waste running races were tremendously successful in reducing their environmental impact.
- The three Boulder triathlon events achieved 93%, 93%, and 92% diversion rates, meaning at each event only 7% of the total waste collected went to the landfill – the highest diversion rates for any Boulder County events in 2007!
- For all events, 4,036 gallons of cardboard was recycled, saving 38 trees
- For all events, 3,350 gallons of comingled containers were recycled, saving 3,870 kW hours of energy
- For all events, 19,649 lbs. of compostable material was collected, creating valuable compost instead of going to waste in the landfill
5430 Sports also worked with Clif Bar and Native Energy to help make the triathlon series carbon neutral, purchasing enough Cool Tags, (renewable energy credits that directly fund Native Energy’s Rosebud St. Francis Wind Farm) to offset each event’s fuel and electricity usage – over 5,000 lbs of carbon emissions. In addition, Clif Bar encouraged event participants to offset their own carbon emissions from travel to the events; enough Cool Tags were purchased to offset over 202,000 lbs of carbon emissions!
According to Barry Siff, Owner of 5430 Sports, “We are committed to building upon the success of our Tri Sustainability program in 2008 by having all of our events’ power generated by either solar or wind power; increasing our focus on carbon emissions; and, by spreading the word and educating our over 7,000 event participants on how they can “Tri Sustainability” at home and in their workplaces.”
