5430 Sports tallies impressive sustainability results in 2007 events
Boulder, Colorado September 5, 2007 — With the passing of Labor Day weekend bringing a hint of fall to Boulder, now is a good time to reflect on the unique mission laid out by to minimize the environmental impact of all their summer 2007 sporting events in Boulder. The Tri Sustainability Initiative was created to emphasize sustainability at the Boulder Triathlon Series, and the Zero Waste event component was integrated into the BoulderRaces! Running Series.
Thanks to a working partnership with Eco-Cycle, and supporting partnerships from Inside Triathlon, Alpine Realty, and Acquire Home Loans, both the Tri Sustainability Initiative at the triathlon series, and the Zero Waste running races were tremendously successful in reducing their environmental impact.
Eco-Cycle helped tally the Zero Waste results for the summer’s events:
- the three triathlon events achieved 93%, 93%, and 92% diversion rates, meaning at each event only 7% of the total waste collected went to the landfill – the highest diversion rates for any Boulder County events in 2007!
- for all events, 4,036 gallons of cardboard was recycled, saving 38 trees
- for all events, 3,350 gallons of commingled containers were recycled, saving 3,870 kW hours of energy
- for all events, 19,649 lbs. of compostable material was collected, creating valuable compost instead of going to waste in the landfill
5430 Sports also worked with Clif Bar and Native Energy to help make the triathlon series carbon neutral, purchasing enough Cool Tags, ($2 renewable energy credits that directly fund Native Energy’s Rosebud St. Francis Wind Farm) to offset each event’s fuel and electricity usage – over 5,000 lbs of carbon emissions.
In addition, Clif Bar encouraged event participants to offset their own carbon emissions from travel to the events; enough Cool Tags were purchased to offset over 202,000 lbs of carbon emissions!
Thanks to all the dedicated volunteers and participants who helped make this season’s 5430 Sports triathlon and running events more sustainable.
Tri Sustainability Initiative reaches new peak at Boulder Peak Triathlon
Boulder, Colorado July 25, 2007 — This past Sunday at the Boulder Reservoir, 5430
Sports’ Tri Sustainability Initiative turned in a peak performance at the EAS Boulder
Peak Triathlon. As the largest event in the three race Boulder Triathlon Series promoted
by 5430 Sports, there was a big opportunity for racers and spectators to show their
environmental consciousness and help minimize the impact of the event.
The Tri Sustainability Initiative helps 5430 Sports operate sustainable triathlon events
and encourages participants to give sustainability a “Tri” at the race and at home. This
summer’s focus has been on two major components necessary for organizing
sustainable events: working towards Zero Waste and becoming carbon-neutral. Thanks
to Inside Triathlon, Alpine Realty, and Acquire Home Loans, the Tri Sustainability
Initiative has achieved tremendous success thus far.
Eco-Cycle once again helped in working to make the EAS Boulder Peak Triathlon a Zero
Waste event, and once again achieved incredible success – a 93% diversion rate! For
the two-day event at the Boulder Reservoir, 93% of the total volume of trash generated
was recycled or composted, and only 7% ended up in a landfill. This outcome has
tangible benefits for the environment, saving the equivalent of 13 trees, 1,705 kilowatt
hours of energy, and 1571 gallons of water, all while creating 7,245 lbs. of compost.
Clif Bar was on hand at the event educating racers and spectators about climate
change, and 5430 Sports provided great raffle prizes as an incentive for people to
reduce their carbon footprint. Clif Bar sold over 300 ‘Cool Tags,’ a $2 renewable energy
credit that directly funds Native Energy’s Rosebud St. Francis Wind Farm. 5430 Sports
bought Cool Tags to offset the event’s carbon emissions, and racers bought enough
Cool Tags to offset over 97,000 lbs of carbon emissions!
5430 Sports’ Tri Sustainability Initiative certainly achieved a new peak at the Boulder
Peak Triathlon, but the program’s continued success depends on the support and
involvement of event participants. “It is rewarding to see more and more racers take
pause from their athletic focus to learn about reducing our environmental impact, and
helping us make the event Zero Waste and carbon neutral,” said 5430 Sports
Environmental Coordinator Ben Turner.
5430 Sports’ next race is the West End 3K on Thursday, July 26 in Boulder, which will
also be a Zero Waste event thanks to Eco-Cycle.

Strong Debut For Tri Sustainability Initiative at 5430 Sprint Triathlon
June 22, 2007 — Last weekend, Olympian Susan Williams set a new course record at the EAS 5430 Sports Sprint Triathlon. 5430 Sports turned in a strong performance as well, not only promoting their typical high quality event, but by becoming the first sustainable triathlon event. The Tri Sustainability Initiative helps 5430 Sports operate sustainable triathlon events and encourages participants to give sustainability a “Tri” at the race and at home.
Inside Triathlon, Alpine Realty (Boulder), and Acquire Home Loans (Colorado Springs) have come on board thus far to support 5430 Sports’ Tri-Sustainability Initiative, allowing the focus to be on two major components necessary for sustainable events: working towards becoming Zero Waste events, and becoming carbon-neutral events.
5430 Sports worked closely with Eco-Cycle in attempting to make the EAS 5430 Sprint Triathlon a Zero Waste event, and achieved incredible success – a 93% diversion rate! For the two-day event at the Boulder Reservoir, 93% of the total trash generated was recycled or composted, and only 7% ended up in a landfill. This outcome has tangible benefits for the environment, saving the equivalent of 11 trees and 1341 KW of energy, while helping create 2.7 tons of compost.
5430 Sports also partnered with Native Energy to offset their carbon dioxide emissions from the event through the purchase of renewable energy credits. These credits help fund Native American-owned wind farms. Clif Bar was also on hand to offer participants ‘Cool Tags,’ a $2 renewable energy credit meant to offset racers’ carbon emissions generated by their travel to the race. Clif Bar and 5430 Sports sold enough ‘Cool Tags’ to offset over 28,000 miles of driving!
While the Tri Sustainability Initiative has gotten off to a good start, the program’s continued success depends on the support and involvement of event participants. “We received great encouragement over the weekend. It was rewarding to see everyone race hard, and then reduce their impact. What could be better?” said 5430 Sports Environmental Coordinator Stu Gillespie.
5430’s next race, which will also include many of the Tri Sustainability components, will be the Uni-Hill 2K on Thursday, June 28 in Boulder.

5430 Sports Launches Tri Sustainability Initiative
June 14, 2007 — 5430 Sports is proud to launch its Tri-
Sustainability Initiative at this weekend’s EAS 5430 Sprint Triathlon, presented by
Bicycle Village. 5430 Sports hopes to usher in a new generation of sustainable
triathlon events organized to minimize the environmental impact of the event
operations, and encourage event participants to give sustainability a “Tri” as part
of their athletic pursuits and daily lives.
Inside Triathlon, Alpine Realty and Acquire Home Loans are key sponsors of the
Tri-Sustainability Initiative, which will feature several components to help “green”
the EAS 5430 Sprint Triathlon and help racers to “green” their participation:
- Working with Eco-Cycle to make this a Zero Waste event. Waste has been
planned out of the event - instead recycling, composting or reusing all discards.
- Purchasing renewable energy credits through Native Energy to offset the CO2
emissions from the event operation.
- Giving racers the chance to offset their travel-related CO2 emissions by
purchasing a Cool Tag from Clif Bar - offsetting 300 miles of driving.
- Providing re-usable Whole Foods tote bags made from recycled plastic in place
of the traditional plastic goodie bags.
The EAS 5430 Sprint Triathlon, presented by Bicycle Village, is the first of three
events in the 5430 Sports “Boulder Triathlon Series.” The Series will see close to
4,000 athletes participate, contending for $50,000 in professional prize money
and over $15,000 in cash and prizes for amateur competitors.
“The ‘Boulder Triathlon Series’ has certainly established itself as one of the most
respected, high quality triathlon series in the U.S. With our Tri-Sustainability
Initiative, we are continuing our commitment to ‘doing the right thing,’ and
hopefully inspiring our participants to transition towards a sustainable future,”
said Barry Siff, Owner of 5430 Sports.
